In the Vajra Vehicle of Secret Mantra.
In the Vajra Vehicle of Secret Mantra, it is called “secret mantra” because it must be kept secret from those who are not suitable vessels, such as beings with strongly mistaken views.
It is also called the “Result Vehicle,” because one meditates on and proceeds along a path that accords with the nature of the result—the wisdom of Buddhahood—from the very present moment.
It is also described as the “Vehicle of Method,” since it teaches many superior and extraordinary skillful means that surpass those of the Perfection Vehicle (Pāramitāyāna). For this reason, it is called the Vehicle of Method.
The meaning of the term “Vajra Vehicle” is that one practices the inseparability of the three—body, speech, and mind—of ordinary beings and the three—body, speech, and mind—of a Buddha.
From such perspectives, Secret Mantra has a great many different names.
Furthermore, this Secret Mantra consists, in general, of teachings directly spoken by the Buddha as well as those taught indirectly. Its meaning has been explained in great detail by learned Tibetan masters, who composed numerous treatises, commentaries, and explanatory works. Because of this, it has also become known by the term “Tibetan esoteric Buddhism.”
In any case, in terms of the ultimate meaning, from when the Buddha first turned the Wheel of Dharma of the Four Noble Truths up to the teachings of Secret Mantra Vajrayāna, all these teachings are included without contradiction within the framework of either the Four Truths or the Two Truths, and they converge into a single essential point.
However, in accordance with the varying capacities, dispositions, and faculties of beings at different stages, a great many vehicles have been taught. This is because the Dharma is taught in ways that are appropriate for taming each particular being. KPG
